Update: There is now a free "Minecraft Launcher" edition available to download on the Microsoft Store. Despite Mojang's efforts, there may be a bit of confusion for players during the initial transition to the unified launcher. However, a Minecraft Java owner on our team wasn't able to claim a download to the new launcher yet, even after migrating to a Microsoft account. I did also need to migrate my Mojang account to a Microsoft account. The process was a bit fiddly for me, but I was able to download the new Windows application launcher by selecting "Minecraft for Windows + Launcher" as my edition on either the Microsoft Store or Xbox PC application. As of today, your current Minecraft Launcher will prompt you to upgrade to an improved launcher version from the Xbox store. Previously, Minecraft PC players used the Minecraft Launcher to play Minecraft Java and the spinoff game Minecraft Dungeons, while Minecraft Bedrock was launched as a standalone application. "If you really want both, try out Xbox Game Pass for PC and just hold tight for a little bit." Due to its independence from Java, the launcher observably starts up and loads faster."We're trying to not encourage people to buy both versions," Aguilar-Gamez says. TL DR: The new launcher no longer requires Java to start, though it is still needed to play Minecraft. No worries, the structure and location of the game's files hasn't changed, so your profiles and worlds are still usable.
Additionally, all previously created profiles and their configurations will be present. Right away, you may notice that the launcher starts up quicker - this is due to bypassing Java on startup. As soon as it is done, the launcher will open. If the shortcut is clicked or double-clicked (depending on your settings), or if the user selects "Run Minecraft" in the installer once it has finished, a program will open and download the Minecraft launcher itself along with a few other components. This defaults to "C:\Program Files" for 32-bit versions of Windows and "C:\Program Files (x86)" for 64-bit versions. When the installer is run, the launcher is downloaded to your Program Files directory and a shortcut is created on the Desktop.
